How in 1958 represented technical progress at the beginning of the XXI century
In 1935, scientist Nikola Tesla gave a forecast of how the world will look at the beginning of the XXI century: wars will go into the past, robots will become everyday, the basis of food will be wheat. And in 1958, the artist Arthur Redbaugh drew the world of technology in half a century - where there was almost everything that surrounds us today.
In the first half of the twentieth century, the popularity of scientific predictions about the future broke all records. It seemed to mankind then that it was capable of constructing the future. Scientists and futurologists believed that progress was linear, and they were armed with such a reliable forecasting “apparatus” as ideology - be it Marxism, fascism, Keynesianism or conservatism. Society was drawn as a machine, and scientists and politicians acted as its designers.
One of the most polovodityh scientists futurists at the time was a mechanic Nikola Tesla. In the 1920s and 30s, he made about 20 predictions, almost one each year. Here, in particular, is his vision of the future from 1935.
US Environmental Protection Agency
Before the creation of the US Environmental Protection Agency, another 35 years remained, but Tesla predicted the establishment of such a department:
“Hygiene, physical education will become recognized areas of education and management. The Secretary for Hygiene and Physical Culture will be much more important than the Secretary of Defense in the office of the President of America, who will take office in 2035. Such pollution of our beaches, which exists today around New York, will seem inconceivable to our children and grandchildren, as it seems to us today is inconceivable life without running water. The water we use will be controlled much more strictly, and only a madman will drink unsterilized water. ”
Education, war and newspapers of tomorrow
“Today, the most civilized countries of the world spend the maximum of their means on war and a minimum on education. XXI century will change this ratio. Greater glory will bring the fight against ignorance than death in war. New scientific discoveries will become more important than the altercations of diplomats.Even the newspapers of our day are beginning to treat scientific discoveries and the creation of new philosophical concepts as news. The newspapers of the 21st century will devote only one column on their last pages of information about crimes or political divisions, while they will be on the front pages of new scientific hypotheses. ”
Health and Diet
Toward the end of his life, Tesla developed a theory about the optimal human diet. In the last days of his life, he ate almost nothing except milk and honey, believing that it was the purest food.
“I personally avoid any stimulants. I also practically refused meat. I am convinced that in a hundred years coffee, tea and tobacco will no longer be fashionable. However, alcohol will still be consumed. This is not a stimulant, but a real elixir of life. Rejection of stimulants will not be compulsory. It will just be no longer fashionable to poison the body with harmful products. The basis of nutrition will be milk, honey and wheat.
In the future, there will be enough wheat and food based on it for the whole world, including the multi-million population of China and India, which is currently constantly on the verge of starvation. The earth is abundant, and where this abundance is absent, the nitrogen extracted from the air will restore the fertility of the soil. ”
Tesla's robotics classes began in the late 1890s, when he patented his remote-controlled boat, and this invention simply amazed visitors of the Electric Exhibition, held in 1898 in Madison Square Garden:
“Currently, we are suffering from the disorder of our civilization, because we have not yet fully adapted ourselves to the machine age. The solution to our problems is not to destroy machines, but to master them.
Countless operations performed today by human hands will be performed by automata. Right now, scientists in the laboratories of American universities are trying to create what is described as a “thinking machine”.
In fact, I even designed “robots”. Today, robots are already a recognized fact, but the principles of their use have not received proper development. In the 21st century, robots will occupy the place that slave labor occupied in ancient civilization. Nothing prevents this from happening in less than a century, and then humanity will be free to realize its higher aspirations. ”
Cheap energy and natural resource management
“Long before the end of the next century, systematic reforestation and scientific management of natural resources will put an end to devastating droughts, forest fires and floods. The widespread use of water-generated electricity and its transportation will ensure that all households have cheap electricity, thereby eliminating the need to burn fuel. The struggle for existence will weaken, and development will take place not in material, but rather in the ideal directions. ”
After World War II, scientific forecasting focused primarily on technology, rather than the reorganization of society. The Interpreter’s Blog shows how the world appeared at the beginning of the 21st century in the works of the famous illustrator Arthur Redbaugh, made in the years 1958-1963:
House of the Future
Breeding food crops
Global labor market
Talking cash register
Round take-off area for aircraft
Robot Traffic Regulator
Moving in space
Police on a superconducting motorcycle
Automated poultry farm
House with solar panels
Tranquilizers sprayed on the streets (to improve the mood of the people)
Police video surveillance on the streets
Highway from USA to Russia
