What is the deepest lake?
Baikal is the deepest lake, both in Russia and in the rest of the world. The maximum depth mark on Baikal is 1642 meters. This mark was recorded in 1983 by members of the hydrographic work of the expedition of the Main Directorate of Oceanography and Navigation of the USSR Ministry of Defense. It was then that it became known for certain what is the deepest lake in the world. In 1992, the maximum depth was indicated on the maps, and in 2002 the Belgian-Spanish expedition completely digitized all the deepest places of Baikal. Analysis using acoustic data dispelled all doubts about which lake is the deepest in the world.
Baikal - a lake of tectonic origin, therefore, was the result of filling the earth’s surface with water. The total length of the coastline is 2100. And the lake itself is located on the territory of Russia, within the Republic of Buryatia and the Irkutsk Region.
