Where does the "throat" come from?
Probably, all people in the world are familiar with this unpleasant feeling: with a strong upset, frustration, a fit of sadness and empathy, a lump that cannot be swallowed appears in the throat. In fact, this “com” is evidence that your autonomic nervous system (ANS) is currently struggling with stress.
When a person experiences strong negative emotions, such as grief and sadness, the ANS reacts the same way as to anger or fear: seeks to saturate the body with oxygen as much as possible. To do this, it makes you breathe faster and expands part of the throat, which is called the glottis, so that the air penetrates faster. So you can make a swallowing movement, the glottis should close. The feeling of muscle resistance to closing the gap at the moment when you are trying to swallow is the very “lump in the throat”.
